Swamp Water Buffalo
Bubalus carabenensis
Swamp Water Buffalo at The Farm at Walnut Creek
Description

Although Water Buffalo have been domesticated for some 5,000 years and their current numbers worldwide are estimated at around 180 million, they have appeared on the American scene only in the last 3 decades. Currently, there are less than 3,500 in the U.S. The Swamp Buffalo is the principal draft animal of southern China and the rice-growing countries of Southeast Asia. It differs from the River species being slate gray in color with a droopy neck and massive swept back horns.

Here at The Farm at Walnut Creek, you will often see our Water Buffalo wallowing in any water or mud puddle they can find or make. Did you know the domesticated water buffalo is often referred to as the “living tractor of the East,” as it is relied upon for plowing and transportation in many parts of Asia.
